Cork is a hilly city on the River Lee, where steep streets of terraced houses look down on the flat island centre. You measure the windows yourself with our online guide, and if you get a size wrong, our free measuring insurance has you covered.
Homes and windows
The centre of Cork sits on an island between two channels of the Lee, with Georgian and Victorian buildings, many converted into flats above ground floor businesses. On the hills of Sunday's Well, Montenotte and St Luke's, Victorian terraces and larger period houses are stacked along steep streets, often with bay windows and views over the city. Ballintemple, Douglas and Blackrock have semi-detached houses and red-brick terraces, while Bishopstown, Wilton and Ballincollig are dominated by 1960s to 1990s estates. Newer apartment blocks line the quays and the docks. Cork's mild, wet climate makes condensation a real issue in kitchens and bathrooms.
Our advice
On the hills of Cork, south-facing front rooms get plenty of sun and big views. Choose 50 mm slats there: tilted up, they block the glare while you still see the city. Back rooms in a terrace are often dark and damp, so pick a lighter colour and a moisture-proof material such as aluminium or faux wood. In a bay window, order a separate blind for each pane. In an older house, measure every window separately, because frames are rarely identical.

Frequently asked questions
Which venetian blind suits a bay window in a Cork terrace?
Order a separate blind for each section of the bay. That way each one sits neatly in its own recess, and you can raise the side panes while keeping the front closed. Choose the same slat and colour throughout. For a living room bay, 50 mm wood or bamboo gives a calm, warm look.
Will a wooden blind survive Cork's damp weather?
Indoors, in a dry living room or bedroom, a wooden blind is fine. Avoid wood in bathrooms, above the hob and in conservatories, where steam and heat can warp the slats. In those rooms, choose aluminium, PVC faux wood or wood-look aluminium, which are all moisture-proof and easy to wipe clean.
What size do I enter when ordering a blind for my Cork home?
Enter the size you want the blind to be, not the window size. For an inside-recess fit, measure the narrowest width inside the reveal and subtract 1 cm. For a fit on the frame or wall, add about 4 cm on each side and at the top. Measure in millimetres.
